Prepare and present a critical reflection based on a situation (or multiple situations) involving a person/people with depression

This assessment requires a speech of 8-10 minutes (around 1500 words) presenting a critical reflection that integrates your knowledge from the unit. You will prepare and present a critical reflection based on a situation (or multiple situations) involving a person/people with depression. To reflect on the situation (or situations), you must use at least four theories/concepts taught in this unit to examine the impact of the situation (or situations) on the lives of people with depression. You will also discuss what you have learnt about disability and how it will influence your future practice as an occupational therapist.

Critical reflection (60%)

Key criteria:
  • Correct use of at least 4 theories
  • Relevant situation/s described
  • Relevant situation/s contextualised (i.e. it is made clear why this situation is appropriate to discuss in relation to this unit/theories)
  • Theories applied to situation appropriately (i.e. relevant to the situation/s)
Discussion well integrated
  • Identify a recent situation or situations involving a person/people with disability. This may be from:
    • An experience you have been personally involved in (e.g. in your paid/voluntary work, on fieldwork, relating to your own life, a family member or friend)
    • Something reported in the media in the last six months (November 2022-present)
    • You are not permitted to use any of the situations that have been covered in class discussions – please ensure you check lecture/lab content to make sure you avoid this. Check with Emma if you are unsure.
  • You can choose to discuss just one situation, or more than one situation. This will depend on what the situation is, and how well you can reflect on the situation using relevant theories.
  • The situation/situations need to be described with enough detail so that the marker has a very clear understanding of what happened.
  • Pseudonyms MUST be used if you are using a personal example for all individuals and any organisation you may need to describe e.g. “I’m a support worker and I work for Agency X, and I support a young man named John, whose name has been changed for confidentiality” (not necessary if you use an article)
